Gopher: interesting facts

The genus of gophers has 38 species !

Gopher weight can range from 190 grams to 1.5 kilograms.

Gophers live in underground minks in small groups of about 20-30 individuals .

They like to sit in a column.

They have poor eyesight.

Like humans, ground squirrels have lacrimal glands . They wash their face with tears from dust and dirt.

On the tip of the tail near the animal there are special sensitive endings that allow them to navigate in the underground passages of their holes.

They are not afraid even of poisonous snakes , especially when it comes to protecting young ones.

They eat 2 times a day : early in the morning and late in the evening, stuffing their cheeks to the dump with food.

Gophers communicate with each other using ultrasound , while the human hearing captures a subtle sound, similar to a hoarse whisper.

A sleeping ground squirrel falls into such an unbroken state of suspended animation that its sleep is considered one of the deepest among the representatives of the animal world.

Each gopher builds its own mink up to 15 meters long at a depth of 1.5 to 7 meters . They have their own system of moves and "rooms". Gophers build "rooms" for the protection of the settlement, for the birth of offspring (summer burrows) , for hibernation (winter burrows) .

They are in hibernation from 5 to 9 months a year. They can hibernate even in the absence of food at any time of the year.

Female gophers are caring mothers: while the offspring are growing and gaining strength, the mother digs separate holes for them, where the children move to. The independent life of gophers begins in 4-5 months.

Gophers are faithful animals. They most often choose a pair for life!
